Discharge is the volume of the water moving down the stream or river per unit of time and discharge measurement is the process of measuring the volumetric flow of water.
Significance of Discharge Measurement
Discharge Measurement is very essential in every phase of installation of hydro power generating unit, right from its survey phase to its operation. It is the factor that determines the potential of any hydro power plant, thus providing crucial information on the future scope of the project. Even during the construction phase of the hydro power plant, discharge measurement serves as a warning system for any abnormal rise in the water level, saving lives and properties from hazardous effects.
After the installation of the plant,the periodic discharge measurement is equally essential to constantly monitor the efficiency of the hydropower plant. Through this technique concerned personnel is notified about the rationale for the decline in the efficiency of power generation and helps them to take prompt alternatives to encounter such problems. Most of the hydro powers are indubitably benefitted, thereby increasing the efficiency of the overall national grid.
How we do it?
Discharge Measurement is achieved by installation of the sensors for measuring the water level in the rivers. There are different sensors available for the water level measurement viz. radar level sensor, bubbler, pressure level sensor, shaft encoder. The sensors are selected in accordance with the characteristics exhibited by the site (river). Once the appropriate sensor is selected, it is installed along with the panel meter and the readings from the sensor are continuously transmitted to the web through the communication module. Thus obtained water level is used for the calibration of discharge of water which is achieved through the construction of rating curve. The rating curve helps to keep track of the flow behavior of the river.
